More hours of daylight mean just one thing to us here at Union Furniture & Flooring — more time outside! Even though it’s still quite chilly, warm temperatures are just around the corner, and that means dinners on the patio, afternoons at the pool, and movie nights in the garden. Is your outdoor space ready for all of that activity?

If not, you’re in luck — We recently started carrying outdoor furniture! And we are super excited about it. Not only because it’s a chance to help you design and decorate a new room of your house, but because the pieces we have are outright fun! Oversized woven swivel chairs made from HDPE all-weather resin wicker, a hanging basket chair (one that is actually comfortable to sit in) and a collection of Adirondack chairs, loungers, dining sets and more from a company called SoPoly that extrudes its own “lumber” made from durable high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sourced from post-consumer recycled materials (you know, those milk jugs and water bottles you put in your recycle bin each week).

As fun as the SoPoly pieces are — we especially love the bright turquoise color option — that’s not really the best part about this brand. It has everything you want in outdoor furniture — comfort, durability and low maintenance. If you doubt us on the comfort, we dare you sit in one of the Adirondack chairs. You won’t want to get up, at least not any time soon. There’s something about the way they cup your body that helps you feel relaxed. And because all of the pieces are made from HDPE, they are weather resistant, fade resistant and clean up with a little soap & water. In fact, SoPoly is so confident in the quality of its “lumber” that they offer a 20-year warranty against cracking, chipping, peeling or rotting. Additionally, the hardware is a marine-grade stainless steel and comes with its own five-year warranty.

Create an Outdoor Room

If you want to create an outdoor space that feels more like a room, it begins with the furniture. But whether you have a lot of square footage or not, what makes a space feel like a room are the accessories. Add an outdoor area rug, weather-resistant pillows, a few potted plants — some hanging, some on the ground, maybe place one or two on the far side of your steps. Group them in odd numbers and in varying sizes (small, medium, large). Have fun with the pots you choose. Maybe select one or two with a bold or interesting pattern or bright colors. An umbrella will add height to the space, and solar-powered outdoor lights will add sparkle. You can string them overhead or wrap them around a post.
