Super Bowl LV Match Up: Coastal Vs. Midwest Style
With Super Bowl LV set for this Sunday, sports fans across the country have been debating the strengths and weaknesses of the two teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Of course, we’re rooting for our Chiefs! But we think this year’s match-up provides a great opportunity for an even better discussion — the differences in home design and décor between the two regions. And while our hearts naturally belong in the Midwest, it’s fun to look at what makes each style work.
Coastal style is marked by bold color (think turquoise water, flamingo pink and palm leaf green); texture and fiber (like sisal and jute rugs, grass cloth wallpaper and sheer, breezy curtains); and open shelving instead of bulky upper cabinets in the kitchen to provide an airy look. Décor accents naturally highlight shells, coral and driftwood.
Midwest style, on the other hand, typically includes a fireplace (or even multiple fireplaces) as the focal point of a room, especially the family room; lots of wood — on the floor, in the furniture, the walls (shiplap!); and built-ins. Midwest décor has trended toward farmhouse style for nearly a decade and doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Sliding barn doors are as popular as ever. Midwest homeowners tend to gravitate toward furniture with transitional styles, our design team says. Right now, a lot of our customers are buying pieces with slimmer arms and a less “puffy” profile, but it seems those big, oversized recliners will never fall out of favor. Sit in one, and you’ll understand why.
No matter what your style, one thing everyone can agree on is that a great dip or two makes any party better. So if you’re planning to gather your family around the TV this Sunday to watch the Chiefs take on the Buccaneers, we’ve got you covered. Here are a couple of our favorite (and always popular) dips, as well as a few serving dishes from Mud Pie that will add an element of fun to your table.
Beer Dip
2 8-oz. packages of softened cream cheese
1 dry ranch dressing mix (if you use the dip mix, it will taste differently)
1 c. shredded cheddar cheese
1 c. shredded pepper jack cheese
1/3 c. beer — we recommend Bud Light or Corona, but any beer will work
Chopped green onions for garnish on top
Salt and Pepper, to taste
Mix all ingredients together and serve with pretzels or pretzel chips.
Guacamole
Avacado, cut into chunks
Tomatoes, diced
Minced garlic
Cilantro, LOTS!
Red onion, diced
Garlic salt/salt to taste
Lime juice — squeeze a little in to keep it from browning
Mix all ingredients and serve with tortilla chips.
