Create a Cozy Reading Nook in Four Easy Steps
Maybe it’s the cooler temperatures or it could be the shorter days, but this time of year always makes me want to snuggle up with a good book (or two). Right now my nightstand is stacked high with three or four novels I’m trying to make time to read. Of course, having the right set up can make or break my reading experience. I like a plush, oversized chair and ottoman with enough room to curl up my legs under a fuzzy blanket or stretch them out in front of me — because when I start a good book, I like to read for hours at a time, if I can. What’s your ideal set up? If you need help setting up a cozy reading nook, we made a list of what you’ll need:
1. The Reading Chair — Creating a reading nook all starts with finding the right chair, but this will be different for everyone. Recliners are an obvious choice, and there are an endless variety of styles with different functions. Power recliners are an excellent choice. They lean you back and lift your legs at the push of a button, and a few styles also offer lumbar support and a power headrest— perfect for reading.
If recliners aren’t your style, consider the comfort of a chair-and-a-half with an ottoman or maybe a chaise lounge. If you have the space, these options are naturally inviting.
If space is more limited, you can go with an armchair and footrest combo. They don’t have to be part of a set; finding two pieces that coordinate will provide function and beauty.
2. The Side Table — Whether it’s coffee, tea, hot chocolate or a glass of wine, a drink is something all readers like to have at arm’s reach, especially if they plan to be reading for a while. We have all shapes, sizes and materials, and you don’t have to limit your options to tables. A small chest is a great idea, because it includes drawers where you can keep other items you’ll want nearby (like maybe some candy, nuts or other munchable snacks and a journal to jot down some notes). A bookshelf is another obvious possibility; it’s a great place to keep all your reading material.
3. The Right Light — If you can set up your reading nook in an area with great natural light, that will serve you well during the day, but for evening reading or if you aren’t near a window, you’ll need a good lamp to create a cozy vibe that overhead lighting just can’t provide. And while it’s a myth that reading in dim light will damage your eyes, it can definitely cause eye strain, which can lead to headaches and your eyes feeling tired.
4. The Relaxation Remedies — This can include anything that helps you unwind and relax, but we are thinking of a trio of necessities: a throw, toss pillow or two (one for your back or head and one to prop up your book) and a scented candle to really set the mood. (Hint: This trio would make an excellent holiday gift combo for any bibliophile on your list).
